Melodic Arpeggios

By Kris Barras

These exercises demonstrate a mixture of 3 string arpeggios, string-skipped arpeggios and right-tapping. They are designed to show a melodic way of getting around the fret board. I always find that students, when learning improvisation, neglect arpeggios and stick to zooming up and down scale shapes. Using arpeggios in the way demonstrated can enable you to link several scale shapes with ease. Aswell as providing a different, more intervallic sound, compared to scale runs.

This exercise is played over a common chord progression, following the chords as they change (i.e. play Am7 arpeggio over Am chord, C arpeggio over C major chord etc). Experiment with your own progressions and try using different arpeggios over different chords to produce different sounds. For example, play a G major arpeggio (G B D) over an Em chord (E G B) to produce an Em7 sound (E G B D)
